Background of the study:
In Ifo Local Government Area, traditional religious beliefs are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of rural communities and significantly influence health practices. These beliefs often determine how illness is perceived and treated, leading to a reliance on indigenous healing methods and spiritual rituals as alternatives to modern medical interventions. Traditional healers and religious rituals play a central role in addressing health concerns, particularly in areas where access to formal healthcare is limited. This cultural paradigm shapes community attitudes toward disease prevention, treatment, and overall health maintenance. Although traditional practices can offer psychological comfort and social cohesion, they may also hinder the adoption of scientifically proven medical treatments (Akinlade, 2023). Recent studies have shown that the integration of traditional and modern health practices can enhance healthcare outcomes if managed appropriately (Oluwafemi, 2024). This research seeks to assess the extent to which traditional religious beliefs impact rural health practices in Ifo and to explore methods for integrating indigenous and modern approaches to improve community health (Ayodele, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
In Ifo, traditional religious beliefs significantly shape health practices, often leading to a reliance on indigenous healing methods that may conflict with modern medical approaches. This dependence on traditional practices can result in delayed or inadequate treatment, particularly for conditions that require prompt and scientifically validated intervention. Limited access to formal healthcare further entrenches these practices, perpetuating health disparities within the community. The tension between traditional and modern healthcare systems creates challenges for public health initiatives aimed at improving overall health outcomes. This study aims to identify the factors that drive this reliance on traditional beliefs and to propose integrative approaches that can bridge the gap between indigenous and modern health practices (Akinlade, 2023; Oluwafemi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the role of traditional religious beliefs in shaping health practices in Ifo.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these beliefs on the adoption of modern healthcare services.

  3. To propose strategies to integrate traditional and modern health practices effectively.

Research questions:

  1. How do traditional religious beliefs influence health practices in Ifo?

  2. What is the impact of these beliefs on the utilization of modern healthcare?

  3. What interventions can bridge the gap between traditional and modern health practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Traditional religious beliefs significantly influence health practices in Ifo.

  2. H2: Reliance on indigenous healing methods reduces the uptake of modern healthcare services.

  3. H3: Integrative health interventions can improve health outcomes in the community.

Significance of the study:
This study is crucial in highlighting the interplay between traditional religious beliefs and health practices in rural settings. It provides valuable insights for healthcare policymakers and community leaders to develop culturally sensitive interventions that respect indigenous traditions while promoting modern health practices. The findings are expected to enhance the overall effectiveness of public health programs in Ifo, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and community wellbeing (Oluwafemi, 2024; Ayodele, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to exploring the influence of traditional religious beliefs on rural health practices within Ifo Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Traditional Religious Beliefs: Indigenous spiritual and cultural practices influencing daily life.

  2. Health Practices: Methods and behaviors adopted to maintain or improve health.

  3. Modern Healthcare: Contemporary medical services and practices based on scientific principles.
